Boston Conservatory

We install deadhung theatrical or studio lighting pipe grids of all shapes and sizes.

Although pipe grids can vary with every project, a basic pipe grid is comprised of #40 1-1/2" steel pipe battens in two levels. The upper level or primary pipe is usually suspended from building structure. The lower level or secondary pipe is attached to the upper pipe battens with grid cross connectors. Though the spacing of the battens can be adjusted to your specific needs, a good, versatile average is 4' x 4'. If possible, the grid should be secured to the walls to prevent lateral movement or for stabilization.

Our pipe grid packages represent some of the most frequently requested grid sizes, but we can price any custom grid size or grid configuration you need. Simply contact our sales department with your specifications for pricing.

DePaul University

iWeiss had the pleasure of providing automation, rigging, and curtains for the newly constructed Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago IL.   The scope of the work included 18 multi-purpose studios outfitted with pipe grids with perimeter curtains tracks, a black box theatre, a single level lobby pipe grid, and a thrust theatre with 25 axis’ of automation manufactured and controlled by Stage Technologies.   Acoustical clouds designed and built by iWeiss, variable acoustical curtains, manual rigging, and a complete stage curtain package were also part of the project.

The job had a total duration of 23 months from start to finish with multiple trade coordination from the first concrete pour until opening. We are proud to have been involved with this project and to be a part of the education that DePaul will be able to provide to their students with this new building.

The Boston Conservatory

The Boston Conservatory has undertaken a complete renovation of its backstage area in order to convert it from an all counterweight house to a motorized rigging system. I. Weiss provided and installed 15 variable speed PowerLift® hoists (180 fpm, 1,250 lb. capacity) for scenery and electric sets. The hoists are controlled by a SceneControl® 500 rigging control system providing accurate, repeatable positioning, and load sensing. The console has 3D graphic views. PowerLift® and SceneControl® manufactured by J.R. Clancy.

iWeiss also installed a motorized brail-style fire curtain, a manual hand crank set, two counterweight sets and a pit filler, and outfitted five studios with pipe grids, tracks and curtains.

Augustana College

Augustana College's Department of Theatre Arts in Rock Island, IL recently received a full upgrade to its Thrust and Loft Theaters that includes iWeiss drapery and rigging equipment.  Working together with Hodge Construction, Theatrical Consultant Bill Conner Associates and BLDD Architects iWeiss ETCP certified project manager Russ Dusek was able to run the project smoothly out of our office in Chicago.

Due to the lack of fly space, the Main Curtain is a Venetian style to allow the curtain to disappear fully out of sight.  The curtain operates on a line-shaft hoist that was fully fabricated in our shop in New Jersey along with the controls.

A pipe grid was installed over the thrust portion of the stage, along with a new lighting rail along three sides.  The stage also received all new battens and curtain tracks, along with eight roto drapers with Black Encore drapery, two tormentors, light ladders, new valances, a rear curtain, cyclorama and legs. The install was made all the more challenging since the building structure over the stage sloped dramatically from downstage to upstage.

The smaller Loft Theatre on the second floor received new lighting positions and variable perimeter tracks and drapery.
